Learning Objectives

Learners will recognize how they can easily be targeted for scams, misinformation, conspiracy theories, and phishing emails. 

  • Learners will share and discuss their experiences with misinformation/scams/conspiracy theories/phishing emails and how these experiences have impacted their lives. 

  • Learners will identify the motives and intentions of those who perpetuate misinformation/scams/conspiracy theories/phishing emails.

​Learners will be able to identify and avoid falling victim to common misinformation/scams/conspiracy theories/phishing emails on a variety of platforms used in daily life.

  • When reading an online article, learners will independently determine its credibility with 80% accuracy.

  • When presented with contrasting articles related to current events, learners will determine which piece is credible via comparing characteristics with 80% accuracy.

  • Learners will examine various websites and evaluate their trustworthiness based on presentation of information, author, and reputation of source. 

  • After exposure to misleading/fake news, learners will be able to identify the author’s (or group’s) purpose and/or goal of the misinformation.

  • After receiving explicit instruction related to common characteristics of phishing emails, learners will recognize at least two characteristics of phishing emails.

  • After exposure to phishing emails, learners will be able to identify commonly targeted pieces of personal information.

Learners will be able to curate a list of credible and accurate information/news sources that they can readily access and distribute this information to peers, friends, and family members.

  • Learners will generate a list of at least five credible news sources that are easily and readily accessible.  

  • Learners will reflect on their past practices of sharing media in order to identify if they previously shared misinformation.

  • Learners will be able to use common social media platforms or file sharing resources to share information with others when necessary
